But why, more than one reporter from highly reputable publications has asked me, is Israel attacking Gaza now? At first, I was astonished: because Hamas cancelled the ceasefire and started massive rocket firings at Israel.
No, they responded, as if I had said something rude. Isn’t it the election, or an attempt to stop the tunnels, or this or that reason?
Absolutely not, I say, it’s like Pearl Harbor, or September 11. If someone announces they are going to go to war with you and then does it, you retaliate and fight.
At that point, the reporters seem to lose interest and bring the interview to an end, as if clearly a person who can say such things is not going to provide any rational analysis. Yet if one cannot even understand this most basic fact, what comprehension can there be of this issue or, indeed, of Middle East politics in general.
There are reasons, however, for this response. Large elements in the West find it very hard to “get,” that is to understand, Hamas or the Palestinians in general—or, for that matter,? Islamists in general, or Arabs in general, or Muslims in general--albeit with all the many variations and exceptions.
The problem with pragmatism:
Today, people ask, why didn’t the Jews of Poland understand the Nazis were going to wipe them out, at least in the earlier period when escape or revolt was more possible? According to contemporary and later eyewitness testimony because they didn’t think Germans would act in such an unpragmatic manner.
After all hundreds of thousands of Jews were involuntarily contributing to the German war effort. They were making clothes, repairing roads, growing food. Why should the Third Reich destroy a highly effective, very cheap, and low-problem labor force, thus crippling itself and helping to ensure that it lost the war?
Answer: ideology. A doctrine and belief system will make people act in a way that doesn’t fit pragmatic expectations. Why should Hamas start a war against a stronger power? Due to believing itself to be stronger and needs to mobilize mass support. Why should Palestinian leaders reject a state even if it means the end of an increasingly small degree of “occupation”? Due to belief that total victory is inevitable, that compromise is treason, and that their enemies are satanic.
The solvency of solutions:
The other big question asked is: what is the solution? How can, as some say, peace be attained; how can Israel, others say, eliminate Hamas? The presumption is that the first or the second is easy, or at least possible.
Answer: Wrong. This is the Middle East we don’t do solutions. Hamas is not going to disappear, nor will it be moderate. Israel, for good reasons, has no interest in occupying the Gaza Strip. Fatah is incapable of retaking control there.
This situation will go on and probably most likely end in some new ceasefire. Hamas will break the ceasefire a bit every week, and smash it altogether every six to eighteen months, repeating the current situation. That isn’t the ideal outcome but it is by far the most likely one.
The unbearable lightness of gratitude:
No matter how much diplomatic aid, sympathy, or money the West gives Hamas—and it has saved Hamas and the PLO over and over from their own mistakes—they will not become grateful or pro-Western. Anti-Western and anti-American sentiment is too valuable and too widespread to disappear. The Palestinians—and Iran’s regime, and Syria’s government, and Hizballah, and other Islamists—need scapegoats. Who else are they going to blame for their problems, themselves?
If you save the terrorists today, they will commit more terrorism tomorrow. If you let them escape the consequences of their own extremism, you can guarantee they will stay extremist and take a lot of the masses with them.
The reality of reality:
In some ways, the most important—or at least second most important—thing to happen in the Middle East this week is that Hizballah leader Hasan Nasrallah went too far, calling for the overthrow of Egypt’s government.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit responded, “They have actually declared war on Egypt….” And when he says “they” he means Iran, Syria, Hizballah, and Hamas. The Saudis and Gulf Arabs are also drawing lines deeper than ever before. Publicly and loudly, they look at Gaza, and see Arabs and Muslims, and criticize Israel. More softly in public and loudly in private they look at Gaza and see the Iranian axis.
This is the Middle East of 2008 and not of 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, or 1998. The Palestinian issue has little effect on any other issue. The real conflict is Iran-Syria against Egypt-Saudi Arabia. Islamists are seeking to conquer the region from Arab nationalists. Radical groups are not interested in happy homelands but jihad and genocide.
And so the issue is not why Israel is attacking Hamas in Gaza now, but why Hamas in Gaza is attacking Israel now.

امروز چهارشنبه بر اثر برخورد موشک گراد که توسط حماس به شهر بئر شوع پرتاب گردیی به مدرسه ئی که قبلأ بدستور مقامات امنیتی تعطیل گردیده بود اصابت کرد و خسارات عمده ئی به کلاسهای ان وارد اورد.
کلاسی که در مدرسه اسیب دیده
دانش اموزان ان مدرسه ساعاتی بعد به دیدن مدرسه و کلاسهای خود که خراب گردیده امدند و با تشکر از خداوند و مقامات هشیار مملکتی که با تدبیر بستن مدرسه تا اطلاع ثانوی جان انان را نجات دادند ان مناظر را با شگفتی مشاهده کردند.

و مدیر کل سازمان جهاد اسلامی رمضان عبدالله شلاه که ساکن سوریه میباشند بعمل امده تا جلو ترور احتمالی انان توسط اسرائیل گرفته شود!. گفتنیست که انان در دمشق پایتخت سوریه اقامت دارند!.
محمود احمدی نژاد رئیس جمهور کشور اسلامی ایران در سخنرانی خود که در زاهدان مرکز بلوچستان ایراد نمود کشورهای عضو سازمان اتحادیه اعراب را مورد نکوهش قرار داد که چرا بجای جلسه کردن و حرف زدن کاری اساسی برای نجات فلسطینیان درگیر با اسرائیل انجام نمیدهند ؟!.
احمدی نژاد حکومت اسلامی
او همچنین سازمان ملل و شورای امنیت ان سازمان را مورد انتقادات شدید قرار داد که از نکوهش اسرائيل در مورد حمله به غزه طفره میروند.
او به کشورهای عربی پیشنهاد خاصی برای دخالت در پایان دادن به جنگ در غزه ارائه نکرد.

בלשכת ראש הממשלה אמרו לאחר דיון הקבינט שיוזמת שר החוץ הצרפתי, ברנאר קושנר, להפוגה בת 48 שעות אינה עומדת כלל על הפרק. הם הבהירו כי יש יוזמות מדיניות אחדות שעל הפרק - אך אף אחת מהן לא הבשילה לכדי דיון מעשי.
"אש הפוליטיקה לא תיכנס לתוך המערכת"

پیام انان برای شهروندان اسرائیل نیست که انان نیز خود تحت وحشت و نگرانی اعمال تروریستی فلسطینیان قرار دارند بلکه روی سخن انان به کسانیست که درامدهای انچنانی و زندگی راحت با ارامش را برای خود و بچه هایشان در کشورهای متمدن و ثروتمند فراهم اورده اند و نمیدانند و یا نمیخواهند بدانند که تعهدی نیز به کشوری بنام اسرائیل دارند که باید بطور مستمر و گشاده دستی به ان کمکهای مالی و انسانی نمایند! که اگر اکنون اسرائیلی وجود نداشت که انان را بر بالهای عقاب اهنین از معرکه ها بگذراند خدا میداند در کشورهائی که دولتهایشان با احساسات ضد یهودی بر ان حکومت میکنند بر سر انان کمتر از یهودیان در زمان المان نازی نمیامد ! تا دیر نشده خومان را از خواب غفلت بیدار و برای اینده ئي که میتواند دوباره ما را دست بدامن کشور اسرائیل نماید ذخیره ئی بنمائیم که بقول معروف شکی نیست که دوباره گذر پوست به دباغ خانه خواهد افتاد !.

ولی ناگهان در غزه تروریستی تصمیم میگیره
که این ارامش رو بخاطر « صلح » بهم بریزه
( امام مسجدی در غزه برای نمازگزاران مسلمان سخنرانی میکنه :
« یهودی یهودیست و باید اونا روسلاخیشون کرد و در هر کجا
که دیدشون اونها رو کشت » ).
در یک لحظه صدای اژیرها شنیده میشن
و لحظه ئی بعد از صدای اژیرها
بی انکه فرصتی بده با قدرت تمام
دیوارها رو در هم میکوبه و
زمینهارو قطعه قطعه میکنه
در یک دقیقه میون خیابون و در مرکز زندگی
در حیاط مدرسه ، در کودکستان
پر از خبرنگار میشه و
گشتیهای پلیس و چند تنفر داوطلب
دخترکی پریشونه و همسنهای دیگش گریون
و در اخبار میگن ، « تلفاتی نداشتیم »
شب که میرسه در پناه ظلمت تورختخوابا میمونیم
و با ترس بخواب میریم
درهای خونه بازه و بچه ها در خوابن
اینطوریه پیش ما وقتی که « میترسیم »
کیلومترها دورتر از شهر مضروب
بچه ها در کنار پدرا و مادراشون در خوابن
دور از هراس و غرق در رویاها
بدون کابوسهای ممتد و دیدن « رنگ قرمز »
ولی در اینجا بچه ئي تو اطاق تقریبأ بخواب رفته
که « قسام » دیگه ئی در زمین متروکه ئي فرود میاد
اما ایندفعه ترس دیگه ئی تو هواست
فریادهای جانخراشه که هوا رو پر میکنه
تکه های بمب به او برخوردن و
زندگیشو تکه تکه کردن
ولی باز در رادیو میگن
« پاهاش زخمهای ساده برداشتن »
مادر زار میزنه

و پدر با گریه التماس میکنه

اخرین خبرها از رویداد غزه
بگزارش یدیعوت اخرونوت در جلسه هیئت دولت یوال دیسکین رئیس سازمان امنیتی کشور گزارش عملیات ان سازمان را در عنلیات غزه به اعضای ان ارائه داد. در این گزارش همچنین بر خسارات عمده ئی که به سازمان حماس وارد امده گفته شده است که کادر عملیاتی ان سازمان در بیمارستانه پناه گرفته اند و در لباس پزشکان و یا پرستاران و بیماران در ان رفت و امد میکنند.
انچه از حملات هوائی اسرائیل از دفتر «اسماعیل هنیه » بجای مانده.
در جواب سؤالی که از دیسکین در مورد چرا هنوز حماس قادر است که اینهمه موشک بسوی اسرائیل پرتاب کند او پاسخ داد که محل پرتاب این موشکها در خانه ها و مدارس قرار گرفته اند ، از این نظر ارتش بخاطر جلوگیری از ریختن خون مردم عادی به ان مکانها حمله نمیکند اما برای رفع این مشکل نیز بزودی تدبیراتی بکار گرفته خواهد شد.
امروز چهارشنبه بر اثر برخورد موشک گراد که توسط حماس به شهر بئر شوع پرتاب گردیی به مدرسه ئی که قبلأ بدستور مقامات امنیتی تعطیل گردیده بود اصابت کرد و خسارات عمده ئی به کلاسهای ان وارد اورد.
کلاسی که در مدرسه اسیب دیده
دانش اموزان ان مدرسه ساعاتی بعد به دیدن مدرسه و کلاسهای خود که خراب گردیده امدند و با تشکر از خداوند و مقامات هشیار مملکتی که با تدبیر بستن مدرسه تا اطلاع ثانوی جان انان را نجات دادند ان مناظر را با شگفتی مشاهده کردند.

به گزارش القدس العربی امروز چهارشنبه بدستور اسد رئیس جمهور سوریه از جانب سازمانهای امنیتی ان کشور احتیاطات امنیتی جدید و بسیار مشکلی در اطراف نمایندگان گروهای فلسطینی بویژه خالد مشعل رئیس دفتر کشوری حماس در خارج از غزه
رمضان عبدالله شلاح که برای جلوگیری از ترور وی توسط اسرائیل مراتب امنیتی شدیدی اتخاذ گردیده.
و مدیر کل سازمان جهاد اسلامی رمضان عبدالله شلاه که ساکن سوریه میباشند بعمل امده تا جلو ترور احتمالی انان توسط اسرائیل گرفته شود!. گفتنیست که انان در دمشق پایتخت سوریه اقامت دارند!.
محمود احمدی نژاد رئیس جمهور کشور اسلامی ایران در سخنرانی خود که در زاهدان مرکز بلوچستان ایراد نمود کشورهای عضو سازمان اتحادیه اعراب را مورد نکوهش قرار داد که چرا بجای جلسه کردن و حرف زدن کاری اساسی برای نجات فلسطینیان درگیر با اسرائیل انجام نمیدهند ؟!.

او همچنین سازمان ملل و شورای امنیت ان سازمان را مورد انتقادات شدید قرار داد که از نکوهش اسرائيل در مورد حمله به غزه طفره میروند.
او به کشورهای عربی پیشنهاد خاصی برای دخالت در پایان دادن به جنگ در غزه ارائه نکرد.

הקבינט לביטחון לאומי הורה להמשיך במבצע "עופרת יצוקה" ברצועת עזה. ראש הממשלה, אהוד אולמרט, אמר בתום הדיון הממושך: "לא נכנסנו למבצע רק כדי לסיים אותו עם המשך הירי כפי שהיה עד לתחילתו"

הירי לעבר ישראל נמשך - וכך גם המבצע בעזה. ביומו החמישי של מבצע "עופרת יצוקה", הצהיר אחר הצהריים (יום ד') ראש הממשלה, אהוד אולמרט, כי "לא נכנסנו למבצע בעזה רק כדי לסיים איתו עם המשך הירי כפי שהיה עד לתחילתו". בסופו של דיון ממושך בקבינט, הוחלט כי צה"ל ימשיך בפעילות הצבאית.

אולמרט הזהיר מפני הפסקת המבצע בשלב הזה: "תארו לעצמכם שאחרי מספר ימים של מבצע, נאמר שסיימנו אותו חד-צדדית ויפול מטח כזה על אשקלון". הוא הזכיר, כי "ישראל הבליגה במשך שנים, נתנה הזדמנות לרגיעה. עשינו זאת בידיעת המחירים שיש לעניין רק כדי שאנשים בדרום יוכלו להתאושש ולהיות תקופה מסויימת של חיים ללא חשש מאזעקת צבע אדום בכל דקה. אמרנו לעצמנו בואו ננסה. אבל החמאס הפר את הרגיעה".
בור שנפער בהפצצת חיל-האוויר בעזה
בלשכת ראש הממשלה אמרו לאחר דיון הקבינט שיוזמת שר החוץ הצרפתי, ברנאר קושנר, להפוגה בת 48 שעות אינה עומדת כלל על הפרק. הם הבהירו כי יש יוזמות מדיניות אחדות שעל הפרק - אך אף אחת מהן לא הבשילה לכדי דיון מעשי.
"אש הפוליטיקה לא תיכנס לתוך המערכת"
ראש הממשלה תקף את מי שקוראים להפסקת המבצע כעת. "האם אתם מבינים את ההשלכות שיש לדבר כזה בארץ ובכל האזור? על הצעד הישראלי שנקטנו, על ההרתעה הישראלית. יחד עם זאת, אם יבשילו תנאים שאנחנו נחשוב שהם נותנים פתרון שיבטיח מציאות ביטחונית טובה יותר בדרום הארץ, אז נשקול את העניין. בינתיים אנחנו לא שם".
אולמרט הבהיר עוד, כי קבלת ההחלטות בעניין המבצע לא נגועה בשיקולים פוליטיים.
כוח צה"ל בגבול הרצועה
"אנחנו בתקופה טעונה פוליטית שמעורבת במתח", אמר אולמרט, "אבל אני לא אתן לאיש להכניס אש של פוליטיקה לתוך המערכת המורכבת והרגישה הזאת. אני, שרת החוץ ושר הביטחון עובדים בעניין זה בשיתוף פעולה והחלטות מתקבלות על בסיס ענייני. זה לא אומר שלא יכולים להיות בינינו חילוקי דעות שהם לגופו של עניין. אבל על הציבור להיות בטוח שהחלטות מתקבלות בצורה שקולה, זהירה ואחראית אבל ללא שיקולים זרים".
במהלך הדיון, דיווח צה"ל דיווח על הפגיעות בחמאס, והציג בפני הקבינט סרטים, שבהם נראו פגיעות במנהרה עמוסה באמצעי לחימה, סרטון של פגיעה במשאיות גראדים, מעבדה לכימיה ולביולוגיה, ומעבדה לאלקטרוניקה לרכיבי טילים.
בצה"ל מעריכים כי 390 פלסטינים נהרגו, מתוכם 40 אזרחים. בישיבה צוינו מנגנוני זהירות להימנע מפגיעה באוכלוסייה: התקשרו ל-100 אלף איש בעזה והזהירו שעומדים לתקוף בניין, כמו כן משתמשים בירי באוויר. המנהיגות הצבאית והאזרחית של חמאס ירדה למחתרת. כרגע, אין שלטון חמאס דה-פקטו. הם ינסו כנראה לשקם את זה במהלך הלחימה.
