Palestinian activists plan massive graffiti protest on West Bank fence

The separation barrier will receive its largest piece of graffiti yet when Dutch and Palestinian activists scrawl on it a 2,000-word letter by a South African scholar arguing that "Israeli apartheid" is "far more brutal" than Pretoria's was.

The letter by Farid Esack will be put on the eastern face of the wall this week by activists belonging to Sendamessage - a Dutch group that collects money over the Internet for painting messages to protest against the barrier Israel is building along the West Bank.

According to Israel, the barrier is designed to keep Palestinian suicide bombers out, but Palestinians say it juts into their land. The letter, to be sprayed in a single line against a white-paint background, is expected to take up over 2,500 meters of concrete beginning near Ramallah.

Property, liquidity hit Islamic finance

DUBAI (Reuters) - Islamic banks hit by the real estate downturn face a crisis that could include layoffs or more rescue measures if liquidity does not improve, with some players aiming simply to survive instead of grow, leading bankers said on Monday.

Sohail Zubairi, chief executive of Dar al-Sharia consultancy, said sparse liquidity continued to dog Islamic and conventional lenders in the United Arab Emirates and that worse could be in store if conditions do not improve by the third quarter.

"Anything is possible in this scenario," he told the Reuters Islamic Banking and Finance Summit Summit in Dubai. Dar al-Sharia was set up in July 2008 by Dubai Islamic Bank to provide financial and legal expertise for the Islamic finance industry.

Washington Divided Over Chinese Muslim Issue

China Confidential has learned that the Obama administration is deeply divided over the issue of Muslim separatism in Xinjiang.

The President, Washington insiders say, would like to issue a statement in support of the Muslim minority Uighurs. Obama is said to believe that Beijing is using Islamist terrorism as an excuse to persecute restive Muslims.

But U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is said to be urging caution. Clinton is concerned that Uighur groups have ties to Al Qaeda-associated Islamist groups, sources say.

Other administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, are also said to be advising against speaking out on behalf of the Uighurs because of U.S. financial dependence on China.

Geithner is also said to be opposed to criticizing China's treatment of Tibet, opaque military buildup, failure to stop North Korea from testing a ballistic missile, and support for nuclear-arming Iran.

Taleban 'shoot eloping couple dead' outside mosque in Afghanistan

Taleban militants murdered a young couple trying to elope in southwestern Afghanistan after accusing them of immoral acts, local Afghan officials reported today.

The incident occurred in Nimroz Province, a bleak desert region on the Iranian border. The governor of the province, Ghulam Dastagir Azad, said that the couple, an unnamed girl of 19 and a man of 21, were condemned by a council of clerics and shot by firing squad. He called the killing an "insult to Islam".

"An unmarried young boy and an unmarried girl who loved each other and wanted to get married had eloped because their families would not approve the marriage," he said.

Nimroz lies largely outside government control, and officials offered limited and sometimes varying details of the couple’s last hours

Sadiq Chakhansori, the chief of Nimroz’s provincial council, said that the pair attempted to flee to Iran, where several million Afghan refugees take up low-paid jobs.

However, their families were reported to have dispatched gunmen to pursue them, said Mr Chakhansori, and they were caught. Reports differ over whether the families turned them over to local Taleban voluntarily or the Taleban took them by force.

"Three Taleban mullahs brought them to the local mosque and they passed a fatwa that they must be killed. They were shot and killed in front of the mosque in public," the governor said.

The couple were shot in the remote district of Khash Rod yesterday, said the provincial council chief. The Nimroz police chief, Jabar Pardeli, said that the Government had no access to the area.

Elopements are regarded as deeply damaging to family honour across Afghan society and murders of women by male relatives are frequently reported. In this instance it is not clear whether the families were complicit in the murders.

Even in government-held areas killings in which there is a clear honour motive are rarely investigated.

Saudi Arabia says it plans to start regulating the marriage of young girls, amid controversy over a union between a 60-year-old man and a girl of eight.
A court in Unaiza upheld the marriage on condition the groom does not have sex with her until she reaches puberty.
Justice Minister Muhammad Issa said his ministry wanted to put an end to the "arbitrary" way in which parents and guardians can marry off underage girls.
But he did not suggest the practice would be abolished.
Human-rights groups oppose such marriages, which they say are often motivated by poverty.
Saudi Arabia implements an austere form of Sunni Islam that bans free association between the sexes and gives fathers the right to wed their children to whomever they deem fit.

The plans for the conference are going well, and I am attaching some information about the conference and list of participants (I think it is real international and high level of experts). In addition, I invited the Prime Minister and Defence Minister and hope one of them can join us as a keynote speaker.

On May 18th, Lord Alliance is receiving a honorary Doctorate from Tel Aviv University.

On the 19th we will have an evening to honour this wonderful man. The conference will be on May 24-25. I will send you the program shortly.

A group of young professionals from LA and NY, called "Thirty Years After" (i.e., after the revolution of 1979), plan to come with a mission for 10 days. They were counting on the LA American-Jewish Federation to help them, but they can only cover their visit in 2 days.

It is important that we will have a large group of young people to visit here and also attend the conference. Since they are young (mid-20s to mid-30s) the ticket and expeses here are not easy for them to cover. Please see if you can do something to help us and them.

The conference is being held in honor of Lord Alliance and we will add few pages of congratulation. Could you phrase few sentences, preferablr as PDF format, and email me at your earliest convenience?

Holding out hope of a cure for deafness

An Israeli hearing loss expert has discovered one of the root causes of deafness, opening up the potential for a whole new range of treatments, and even possibly a cure for both genetic and age-related deafness.
In a landmark study, Prof. Karen Avraham of Tel Aviv University has revealed that microRNAs - tiny molecules that regulate cell functions found in the 'hair' cells of the ear - help us to hear.
Deafness continues to be a significant problem in medicine today. For all the progress made in the last years, still one in 1,000 US babies are born deaf. The numbers increase as the population grows older, with more than 50 percent of pensioners in America experiencing some form of hearing loss, making it the most common disability in humans.
Despite this, doctors still don't know what causes hearing loss in most peopl, but they do know where the process starts to break down.

۳۰ سال از ۱۲ فروردين ۵۸، روز تاسيس جمهوري اسلامي ايران گذشت. با گذشت اين ۳۰ سال به نظر ميرسد آنقدر زمان ‏پشت سر گذاشته ايم که علل و عوامل ديرپاتر شکست پهلويسم (۱) و استقرار جمهوري اسلامي در ايران، را با خون سردي ‏کافي بررسي کنيم. ‏

تا کنون صدها کتاب و هزاران رساله در اين باب نوشته شده و تقريبا همه نحله ها، هر يک به زبان حال، فهم خود از علل ‏انقلاب را با رجوع به حقايق مستدل ساخته اند. قصد از تحرير اين مقاله نيز همين است؛ منتها نه از طريق بازنگاري و ‏چينش تازه اي از رويدادها و يا نقد عمل فعالين در پائين.

حکم قصاص دختری که در سن هفده سالگی به قتل متهم شده است

به گزارش روزنامه اعتماد چاپ تهران، مقامات قضائی جمهوری اسلامی ایران از والدین دلارا دارابی - دختر جوانی که متهم است در هفده سالگی زنی را به قتل رسانده است- خواسته اند برای گرفتن رضایت از اولیای دم و رهاندن دخترشان از مرگ آخرین تلاش هایشان را به عمل آورند وگرنه حکم قصاص در روز های آینده اجرا و دلارا به دار آویخته خواهد شد.

عبد الصمد خرمشاهی، وکیل مدافع دلارا دارابی در گفتگوئی با ما تأکید می کند که دلارا بی گناه است و پس از اعتراف به فتل در روز دستگیری در دادگاه این اعتراف را پس گرفته و تا به امروز بر بیگناهی خود پای فشرده است.

به گفتۀ دلارا دارابی ، دوست پسر او مرتکب این قتل شده و ازاوخواسته است که این قتل را به عهده بگیرد چرا که به باور او دخترهفده ساله را مجازات اعدام تهدید نمی کرده است.

علاوه بر این، عبد الصمد خرمشاهی با تکیه بر چپ دست بودن و قد و قوارۀ ظریف موکل خود می گوید که این دختر جوان نمی تواند عامل زدن ضربات چاقوئی باشد که با دست چپ فرود آمده و در قسمت چپ بدن مقتول نشسته است وآنهم در حالی که جوان تنومندی بین آن دو حائل بوده است.

با توجه به طی شدن کلیۀ مراحل قانونی، عبدالصمد خرمشاهی هنرمندان ایرانی را به شتافتن به یاری دلارا و جلب رضایت اولیای دم فرامی خواند چرا که دلارا یک هنرمند نقاش است که از آثارش دونمایشگاه در زندان و نمایشگاه دیگری در یکی از گالری های تهران برپا شده است. دلارا دارابی از شش سال پیش در زندان به سر می برد.

דיפלומטים בז'נבה מסרו כי הושג הסכם פשרה על נוסח הצהרת הסיכום של ועידת האו"ם נגד גזענות שתתקיים בשבוע הבא בז'נבה, בניסיון לרצות את אירופה וארה"ב. ל-ynet נודע כי התיקונים מינוריים וכי ההאשמות הקשות נגד ישראל שהתקבלו לפני שמונה שנים - יאושררו שוב

הושג הסכם על נוסח הצהרת הסיכום של ועידת האו"ם נגד גזענות (דרבן 2) אשר תתקיים בשבוע הבא בז'נבה - כך מסרו הערב (יום ו') דיפלומטים אירופים המעורים בדיונים. עם זאת, ל-ynet נודע כי נוסח טיוטת ההצהרה אינו מסיר את החלטות ועידת דרבן הראשונה מ-2001 אשר מגדירות בין היתר את ישראל "מדינה גזענית וכובשת" ומשווה בין ציונות לגזענות - דבר הנחשב בירושלים ובוושינגטון ל"קו אדום".המשך
